The Usher Who Watched the Room

He arrived in Mombasa by steamer from India in the 1920s. As far as anyone recorded, he came with nothing: no capital, no connections. He started as a cinema usher, the lowest job in the building, the man who shows you to your seat and disappears.

He wasn't watching the films. He was watching the business: how much East African audiences wanted cinema, the gaps in entertainment across the region's growing cities, the economics of a trade most people only saw as customers. He read what others walked over.

Across the 1950s and 1960s he built the Odeon cinema chain, one cinema at a time: Nairobi, Nakuru, Kampala, Jinja, Dar es Salaam. He also held the Woolworths franchise in Nairobi. He arrived as an usher and ended up with businesses in five East African cities.
